UK Number Plates Explained: How to Read Them and What the Law Says

A current UK number plate has two letters for the area where the car was first registered, two numbers showing when, and three random letters. The numbers change every March and September, so they tell you the car's age to within six months.

How do I read a UK number plate?

The format used since 2001 has three parts:

• Two letters: the region where the vehicle was first registered.

• Two numbers: when the registration was issued.

• Three letters: chosen at random.

How do the age numbers work?

New numbers are released twice a year, on 1 March and 1 September.

• March to August: the last two digits of the year. A 26 plate was first registered between March and August 2026.

• September to February: the year plus 50. A 76 plate was first registered between September 2026 and February 2027.

So a 19 plate is from spring or summer 2019 and a 69 plate is from autumn 2019 or early 2020. A private plate breaks this link, which is why you should always confirm the date of first registration on the V5C. Our guide to the V5C log book shows where to find it.

What are the legal rules for number plates?

According to GOV.UK, number plates must:

• be made from a reflective material, with characters that are not reflective or removable;

• show black characters on a white background at the front and on a yellow background at the rear;

• have no background pattern;

• be marked to show who supplied them;

• be marked with the British Standard number, which is BS AU 145e for plates fitted after 1 September 2021. Characters on those plates must be a single shade of black.

What happens if my plates do not meet the rules?

You cannot rearrange letters or numbers, or alter them so they are hard to read. That includes odd spacing and screw caps placed to change a character. You can be fined up to £1,000, and the vehicle will fail its MOT.

How do I get a replacement plate made?

Plates can only be made up by a registered number plate supplier. You need to show original documents that prove who you are, such as a passport, and that you are entitled to the registration number, such as the V5C.

Be wary of any seller that will make a plate without asking for those documents.

Common questions

Can a private plate make my car look newer?

No. DVLA does not allow a registration number that makes a vehicle look newer than it is. You could not put a 26 plate on a 2019 car, for example. Making a car look older is allowed.

Do the first two letters show where a car is now?

No. They only show where it was first registered. Cars registered in Yorkshire start with the letter Y, but a car can be sold anywhere in the country afterwards.

Does a newer plate make a used car worth more?

Age is one factor in value, but mileage, condition and service history usually matter more than six months either way on the plate.
