The V5C log book is an official document issued by the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency). It records the registered keeper of the vehicle, but not necessarily the legal owner.
✅ Vehicle details – Make, model, colour, engine size, fuel type, etc.
✅ Keeper details – Name and address of the registered keeper
✅ Date of first registration – When the car was originally registered in the UK
✅ Previous registered keepers – A history of past registered keepers
✅ VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) – A unique identifier for the car
🚗 "I own the car because I have the V5C." – The log book does NOT prove ownership; it just states who is responsible for taxing and registering the vehicle.
🚗 "My new log book should arrive instantly after a plate retention." – After a number plate change (such as retaining a private plate), the DVLA issues a new V5C, but it can take 4-6 weeks to arrive. During this time, your car is still legally registered, but the paperwork is catching up.
🚗 "A missing V5C means the car isn’t legit." – Not necessarily, but it’s a red flag. A replacement can be requested from the DVLA for £25, so always be cautious if a seller is reluctant to apply for one.
Many customers mistakenly believe that MOT history is the same as a service history—but they are entirely different!
The MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is a legal requirement for vehicles over three years old. It’s an annual check to ensure your car meets road safety and environmental standards.
✅ MOT records are stored online and can be checked for free at:
👉 Check MOT history on GOV.UK
🔧 Whether the car has passed or failed previous tests
🔧 Any advisory notes (e.g. “Tyres worn close to legal limit”)
🔧 The recorded mileage at each MOT
❌ Whether the car has been regularly serviced
❌ Any past repairs or maintenance done between MOT tests
❌ If the car has had oil changes, brake fluid replacements, etc.
A service history is a record of maintenance and repairs carried out on the vehicle. Unlike an MOT, servicing is not a legal requirement, but it’s crucial for keeping the car in good condition.
📖 Stamped service book – A physical booklet stamped by the garage after each service
📱 Digital service history – Some manufacturers (e.g. BMW, Mercedes, Audi) store service records online rather than using a paper booklet
✅ Helps maintain resale value – A fully serviced car is worth more
✅ Ensures warranty compliance – Many warranties require a full service history
✅ Prevents unexpected breakdowns – Regular servicing helps spot issues before they become expensive problems
Many people assume that when a dealer or seller says, “the services are online,” they mean the MOT history. In most cases, what they actually mean is that the vehicle has no physical service book, but the history is stored digitally by the manufacturer.
If a car’s services are recorded digitally, the dealer can usually provide a printout or access the records through the manufacturer’s system. Always ask for proof!
🔎 Visit GOV.UK and enter the vehicle’s registration number
🔎 Review past MOT results, advisories, and mileage consistency
📖 If there’s a service book: Look for dealer or garage stamps and recorded mileage
📱 If services are online: Ask the seller for a printout or check with the manufacturer
⚠️ No service history? Be cautious—this can indicate a poorly maintained vehicle
Understanding the V5C log book, MOT history, and service history is essential for both buyers and sellers. Always:
✅ Check the V5C log book for accurate keeper details
✅ Verify the MOT history online for past failures and advisories
✅ Ensure the service history is complete, whether in a physical book or digital records
