So, your friend has decided to switch from an electric car to petrol? Bold move. They say they want “more convenience” and “a proper driving experience,” but do they realise what they’re getting themselves into? Let’s take a look at some of the challenges they’ll now be facing.
1. They’ll Have to Visit Petrol Stations Again
Remember the days of plugging in at home and waking up to a fully charged car? Well, that’s over. Instead, they’ll need to make regular detours to the nearest petrol station, usually at the most inconvenient moments—probably in the rain, with an empty tank, and a queue of other cars blocking the pumps.
2. Oil Changes Are Back on the To-Do List
EV drivers don’t worry about engine oil. Or spark plugs. Or timing belts. But petrol drivers? Oh, they’re in for a treat! Every few thousand miles, it’s time for an oil change, and if they forget, they’ll have the added excitement of an angry engine light blinking at them.
3. They’ll Have to Get Used to Exhaust Fumes
Gone are the days of clean, quiet driving. Now, every time they start the engine, a lovely puff of emissions joins them on their journey. Nothing says “fresh air” quite like standing in a petrol station, surrounded by the scent of unleaded and diesel.
4. Winter Mornings Just Got More Annoying
Electric cars let you warm the cabin while the car is still plugged in. But with petrol, they’ll be out in the cold, scraping ice off the windscreen while the engine grudgingly starts up. Lovely.
5. No More Instant Acceleration
EVs give you all the power, right when you need it. But petrol cars? They like to take their time. First, the revs build, then the gears shift, then—if they’re lucky—the car finally gets moving. Hope they weren’t in a hurry!
6. Gear Changes Are a Thing Again
Most EVs don’t have gears, meaning it’s just press-and-go simplicity. But in a petrol car, they’ll either be fiddling with a manual gearbox or waiting for an automatic to decide what it’s doing. Either way, it’s not quite the seamless drive they were used to.
7. No More Regenerative Braking
In an EV, slowing down helps recharge the battery. In a petrol car? It just wastes energy—and wears out the brakes faster. So, they can look forward to more maintenance bills. Lucky them!
8. They’ll Have to Pay Whatever the Fuel Price Is
EV drivers can take advantage of off-peak electricity rates, charging up while they sleep. Petrol drivers, on the other hand, are stuck with whatever price is on the pump that day. And if there’s a sudden price hike? Well, bad luck.
9. Goodbye, Peace and Quiet
EVs are silent. Petrol cars? Not so much. Whether it’s the rumble at idle, the roar on acceleration, or the constant hum on the motorway, there’s always some kind of noise happening. Time to turn up the radio!
10. Back to Producing Emissions
Most EV drivers enjoy knowing they’re reducing their carbon footprint. Going back to petrol means… well, undoing all that. Not the most modern choice, is it?
Would Anyone Really Switch to Petrol?
Joking aside, petrol cars still have their fans, and for some people, they make sense. But once you’ve experienced the smooth, quiet, and hassle-free life of an EV, it’s hard to see why anyone would willingly go back to engine oil, exhaust fumes, and standing at the pump.
What do you think—could you ever go back to petrol?
