An eligibility check that uses a soft search does not affect your credit score and cannot be seen by other lenders. A full finance application uses a hard search, which is recorded on your credit file and is visible to lenders. Always ask which type of search will be done before you give your details.
Soft search. A look at your credit file to give an indication of whether you are likely to be accepted. You can see it on your own report, but lenders cannot, and it does not change your score.
Hard search. A full check made when you formally apply for credit. It stays on your file and other lenders can see it.
One hard search is a normal part of borrowing. Several in a short period can make lenders cautious, because it can look as though you are struggling to get credit.
There are two points to be aware of:
When a full application is submitted to a lender, a hard search is recorded.
Once an agreement is running, the account and your payment record appear on your file. Payments made on time help. Missed payments do harm.
If an application goes to more than one lender, each may carry out its own search. Ask the dealer or broker how many lenders your application will be sent to, and in what order.
It usually helps. Knowing roughly where you stand lets you look at cars that fit your budget and avoids a full application that was never likely to succeed. An eligibility result is an indication only. It is not an offer and it does not mean an application will be approved.
Check your own credit report first. It is free and does not affect your score. MoneyHelper explains how to check your credit report for free.
Correct any mistakes and make sure you are on the electoral roll at your current address.
Use soft-search eligibility checks while you compare, and keep full applications to the one you intend to go ahead with.

Your file records the search, not the decision. It is the number of recent hard searches that lenders notice. If you are declined, find out why before applying anywhere else. MoneyHelper has a guide to what to do if you have been refused credit.
Yes. A soft search costs your score nothing and gives you a clearer picture than guessing. Our guide to car finance with bad credit covers what lenders look at.
No. You can look at your own report as often as you like without any effect on your score.
