Is Electric Car Insurance Getting Cheaper?

Is Electric Car Insurance Getting Cheaper?

Electric car insurance has been getting cheaper. Comparison site data shows average EV premiums falling since 2023, as insurers gain more claims data and repairers become more used to electric cars. Prices still vary a lot by car, driver and postcode, so always get a quote on the exact car before you buy.

Why has electric car insurance been more expensive?

When electric cars first arrived in large numbers, insurers had little claims history to work from. Repairs to batteries and high-voltage systems needed specialist skills and equipment, and some parts were expensive or slow to get hold of. Insurers priced in that uncertainty.

Why are premiums coming down?

  • More data. With far more EVs on the road, insurers can price risk more accurately.

  • Better repair skills. More bodyshops and technicians are now trained to work safely on electric cars.

  • More competition. More insurers now quote for electric cars on standard policies.

There is no guarantee this will continue, and a fast, heavy or premium EV can still be expensive to insure.

What other running costs should I think about?

Charging

Charging at home on an off-peak tariff is usually much cheaper per mile than petrol or diesel. Public rapid charging costs considerably more, so your savings depend on where you charge.

Servicing

Electric cars have no engine oil, clutch, cambelt or exhaust, and regenerative braking helps brakes last longer. They still need regular servicing and an MOT from three years old. Tyres can wear faster because EVs are heavy.

Vehicle tax and grants

Electric cars have paid vehicle tax since April 2025. The GOV.UK guidance explains the current rules. Government grants for electric cars apply to eligible new cars only, not used ones.

Is an electric car right for me?

The biggest question is whether you can charge at home. With a driveway and an off-peak tariff, the running-cost case is usually strong. If you would rely on public chargers, check local coverage and costs first, because a hybrid or efficient petrol car may suit you better. Our EV hub and cost comparison calculator can help you weigh it up.

Common questions

Do I need a special policy for an electric car?

No. Most mainstream insurers cover EVs on standard policies. Check what cover there is for the battery, charging cables and any home charger.

How can I keep my EV insurance down?

Compare quotes, choose a sensible excess, and pick a model in a lower insurance group. Smaller, less powerful EVs are usually cheaper to insure.

Can I get an electric car on finance?

Yes, in the same way as any other car, subject to status and affordability checks. We are a credit broker, not a lender. We receive a commission from the lender, which we disclose, and we will tell you how much it is if you ask. See our car finance page for more.
