How to Avoid DPF Problems on a Diesel Van

Most diesel particulate filter (DPF) problems on vans come from short, slow journeys that never let the filter get hot enough to clean itself. A regular longer run at steady speed, the right engine oil, and acting quickly on a DPF warning light will prevent most of them.

What does a DPF do?

The DPF sits in the exhaust and traps soot from the diesel engine. To stop it filling up, it burns the soot off at high temperature, a process called regeneration. This usually happens on its own during longer runs, or the engine management can trigger it when the filter is getting full.
