How to Check If Your Van's MOT Is Up to Date

Enter the van's registration number in the free GOV.UK MOT checker. It shows whether the MOT is valid and the date it runs out. You do not need the log book, and it works for any van, including one you are thinking of buying.

How do I check a van's MOT status?

1. Go to Check the MOT status of a vehicle on GOV.UK.

2. Type in the registration number.

3. Confirm the make and colour match the van, then read the expiry date.

The date is also printed on the last MOT certificate. The official service is free, so there is no reason to use a paid or third-party checker.

Can I see a van's past MOT results?

Yes. The MOT history service lists past passes and fails, the recorded mileage at each test, and any advisories. For a work van this is worth five minutes. Look for the same advisory appearing year after year, and for mileage that goes up steadily.

When does a van need an MOT?

A van needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of its registration, and then every year by the anniversary of the last test.

You can have it tested up to a month, minus a day, before the expiry date and keep the same renewal date. If the MOT runs out on 15 May, the earliest you can test and keep that date is 16 April.

Which MOT class is my van?

It depends on the design gross weight, which is on the van's plate and in the V5C:

• Up to 3,000kg: Class 4, the same as a car. The maximum test fee is £54.85.

• Over 3,000kg and up to 3,500kg: Class 7. The maximum test fee is £58.60.

Not every garage tests Class 7, so check before you book a larger van in. The fee limits are set by the government and listed on GOV.UK.

What happens if I drive a van without an MOT?

You can be fined up to £1,000. The only exceptions are driving to a pre-arranged MOT test, or to or from somewhere to be repaired. You also cannot park an untested vehicle on the road.

Driving a vehicle that has failed with a dangerous defect is more serious: the fine can be up to £2,500, with three penalty points and a possible ban.

How do I make sure I never miss it?

• Sign up for the government's free MOT reminder by text or email.

• Book in the month before expiry, so a fail leaves you time to get repairs done while the old MOT is still valid.

• If you run more than one van, keep the dates in one calendar and spread them through the year where you can.

• Do a quick walk-round first: lights, tyres, wipers, washers, horn and number plates catch out a lot of vans.

Common questions

Is there a grace period after the MOT runs out?

No. The MOT is valid up to and including the expiry date, and the van is untested from the next day.

Can I check the MOT on a van I do not own?

Yes. Both GOV.UK services only need the registration number, so you can check any van before you view it.

Does a pass mean the van is in good condition?

It means the van met the minimum legal standard on the day of the test. It does not cover the engine, clutch or gearbox, which is why regular servicing still matters.
