Is a Used EV Actually Cheaper to Run in 2026? The Real-World Maths

We get asked this every single week at Any Colour Car: "Is it actually worth switching to electric, or is it just a gimmick?"

In 2026, the used EV market is finally "mature." You can now pick up 3 or 4-year-old Teslas, Nissan Leafs, and Hyundai Konas for a fraction of their original price. But do the running costs actually stack up against a reliable petrol or diesel car?

We’ve crunched the numbers so you don’t have to. Here is the straight-talking truth about the "Total Cost of Ownership."

1. The "Fuel" Factor: Electricity vs. Petrol

This is the biggest saving, but only if you’re smart about it.

  • Petrol/Diesel: At current South Yorkshire pump prices, a typical family car costs around 15p–18p per mile in fuel.

  • EV (Home Charging): If you have a driveway and an off-peak EV tariff, you can get your costs down to as little as 3p–5p per mile.

  • EV (Public Charging): If you rely solely on public rapid chargers, the cost is much closer to petrol.

The Verdict: If you can charge at home in Barnsley, you’ll save over £1,000 a year just on "fuel" if you do 10,000 miles annually.

2. Servicing & Repairs: The "Tesla Example"

This is where EVs really win. A petrol engine has hundreds of moving parts—timing belts, spark plugs, exhaust systems, and complex gearboxes. An EV has about twenty.

However, some people worry that when an EV does need work, it’s expensive. This is where the "Main Dealer Tax" comes in. As we recently showed with a Tesla Model X:

  • Main Dealer Quote for Front Brakes: Over £1,000 + VAT.

  • Any Colour Car Price: £558 INCLUDING VAT.

Because we have the specialist skills and equipment without the massive corporate overheads, we can maintain your EV for a price that makes sense. No "upsell" videos, no hidden bonuses—just expert maintenance.

3. Tax and Incentives

While the government has started to phase in VED (Road Tax) for EVs, they are still often cheaper to tax than older, high-emission diesel SUVs. Plus, if you’re a business owner or using the car for work, the Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) rates for EVs remain significantly lower than petrol or diesel alternatives.

4. Depreciation: The "Sweet Spot"

The biggest "cost" of any car is depreciation (how much value it loses).

  • New EVs: Like any new car, they lose a chunk of value the moment they leave the showroom.

  • Used EVs: This is where the value is. By buying a 3 or 4-year-old EV, the previous owner has already "paid" for the steepest part of the depreciation. You get a high-tech, modern car for a much more sensible price.

5. The "Battery Anxiety" Myth

"What if the battery dies?"
In 2026, we have years of data showing that EV batteries are incredibly hardy. Most manufacturers offer an 8-year battery warranty, meaning a 4-year-old car still has plenty of factory protection left. At Any Colour Car, we only stock EVs with healthy batteries and clear histories.

Summary: Is it right for you?

A used EV is the "smart money" move if:

  1. You can charge at home or at work.

  2. Your daily commute is within the car's real-world range (usually 150–250 miles).

  3. You want to slash your servicing bills by using a skilled independent specialist like us.
