You must not stop on school keep clear zig-zag markings when the signs prohibit stopping, even for a few seconds to let a child out. In Barnsley, a parking ticket (penalty charge notice) is £50 or £70 depending on the contravention, halved if paid within 14 days. The simplest way to avoid one is to park legally a short walk away.
School keep clear markings are yellow zig-zag lines outside a school entrance, usually with an upright sign showing the times the restriction applies. Highway Code rule 238 says that when the signs prohibit stopping, you must not wait, park, or stop to set down or pick up passengers on them.
That last part is what catches people out. A quick drop-off on the zig-zags still counts as stopping.
Barnsley Council's guidance says you may stop only for the time needed for a child to get in or out of the car, and that even this is not allowed on a school keep clear marking. You also need to follow any yellow lines, junction rules and other restrictions nearby.
The Highway Code also advises against stopping or parking near a school entrance, opposite or within 10 metres of a junction, or in front of an entrance to a property.
Barnsley Council says a penalty charge notice is £50 or £70, depending on how serious the contravention is. If you pay within 14 days of it being issued, it is reduced by half. For a notice sent by post, the discount period is 21 days. Details are on the council's parking fines and enforcement page.
Check the signs. Restriction times vary from school to school, so read the upright plate rather than relying on the lines alone.
Park legally and walk the last stretch. A couple of minutes on foot usually beats circling the gate.
Let children out on the pavement side. It is safer, and the Highway Code recommends it.
Leave a little earlier. Arriving with time to spare makes it easier to find a legal space.
Have a back-up spot. Roadworks or a busy morning can take your usual space.
Follow the instructions on the notice. Barnsley Council accepts challenges online or by post, and you will need evidence to support a challenge. Keep an eye on the deadlines, because the discount only applies for a limited time.
Short school-run trips and cold mornings are hard on batteries, and darker evenings show up blown bulbs and smeared wipers. Before the clocks go back, check:
All lights, including brake lights and the number plate light
Wipers and screen wash
Tyre pressures and tread
Child seats are fitted correctly and suit your child's height and weight
If your car is struggling to start or a warning light has come on, our service centre can take a look.
Not when the signs prohibit stopping. Even a brief stop to let a child out is not allowed on school keep clear markings.
No. They are different markings, but you must not stop or park on either.
It depends on the school. The upright sign shows the times that apply, so check it each time.
