Sheffield Clean Air Zone: A Plain English Guide for Barnsley Drivers

Private cars and motorbikes are not charged in Sheffield's Clean Air Zone. Vans, taxis, buses, coaches and lorries that do not meet the emission standard pay a daily charge: £10 for vans and taxis, and £50 for buses, coaches and HGVs.

What is the Sheffield Clean Air Zone?

It is a Class C charging zone covering Sheffield's inner ring road and city centre. It is not a congestion charge that everyone pays. It only applies to certain types of older, more polluting vehicle.

Clean air zones run 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The charge period runs from midnight to midnight, so one payment covers as many trips into the zone as you make that day.

Which vehicles have to pay?

Sheffield City Council lists these as the vehicle types that can be charged if they do not meet the standard:

• £10 a day: vans and other light goods vehicles, taxis and private hire vehicles. Larger campervans and motorhomes also pay this rate.

• £50 a day: buses, coaches and heavy goods vehicles.

The council also says some SUVs and four-by-fours can be caught, depending on how the vehicle is classed on its registration. If you drive a pickup or a large 4x4, check the registration rather than assuming.

What emission standard does my van need to meet?

The national minimum for vans, minibuses and taxis is Euro 6 for diesel and Euro 4 for petrol. Buses, coaches and lorries need to be Euro VI.

Age is only a rough guide to which standard a van meets, because the changeover dates were different for cars and vans. An older Euro 5 diesel van will usually be charged. The registration check below gives a definite answer.

How do I check my vehicle and pay?

Enter your registration in the government's clean air zone checker. It tells you whether you will be charged in Sheffield and in every other clean air zone in England.

You pay through the same GOV.UK service. You can pay up to six days before you travel, on the day, or in the six days after. Miss that window and you can expect a penalty charge notice.

Do other clean air zones charge private cars?

Some do. Birmingham and Bristol run Class D zones, which include private cars. Bath, Bradford, Portsmouth and Tyneside, like Sheffield, do not charge private cars. London's Ultra Low Emission Zone is a separate scheme and does charge older cars.

Will my own car ever be charged in Sheffield?

Not as a private car. The exception is a car licensed as a taxi or private hire vehicle, which is charged if it does not meet the standard.

Is it worth changing my van to avoid the charge?

It depends how often you go in. Count the days a month you drive inside the ring road and multiply by £10. For an occasional job the charge is the cheaper option. For daily work in the city centre it adds up quickly.
