Yes. Being self-employed does not stop you applying for car finance, and many self-employed people are accepted. The difference is that a lender may want more evidence of your income, because there are no payslips to rely on. Every application is still subject to status and affordability checks.
They ask the same questions they ask of anyone: who are you, how have you handled credit before, and can you afford the payments? What changes is how income is confirmed. Lenders generally look for:
Evidence of income. Figures that can be backed up with documents.
Stability. How long you have been trading and whether your income is reasonably consistent.
Affordability. Income set against housing costs, other credit and regular commitments.
Credit record. Your personal credit file, the same as for an employed applicant.
It depends on the lender and on how you work. Common requests are:
recent personal or business bank statements;
SA302 tax calculations and tax year overviews from HMRC;
accounts prepared by an accountant;
for company directors, evidence of salary and dividends.
You can download SA302s and tax year overviews from your HMRC online account once your Self Assessment return has been submitted. GOV.UK explains how to get your SA302 tax calculation.
Not necessarily. Plenty of trades have busy and quiet months. Lenders tend to look at the picture over a longer period, so use figures you can support with your tax return or statements. Do not overstate your income. If it cannot be evidenced, the application is likely to be declined, and knowingly giving false information to obtain credit is a serious matter.
It is harder without a full year of figures, and some lenders will want to see a completed tax year. Others may consider bank statements and your previous employment history. A deposit or a less expensive car can help, but nothing guarantees an approval.

Have three to six months of bank statements ready.
Work out a monthly payment you could still manage in a quiet month.
Check your credit report and correct any mistakes.
Decide whether the vehicle is for personal or business use, and tell the broker.

Not always. Some lenders accept bank statements or HMRC tax calculations. It varies by lender and by the amount you want to borrow.
It can be. Finance taken out wholly or mainly for business purposes may not carry the same consumer protections as a regulated personal agreement, and the tax treatment differs. Check which type of agreement you are being offered, and speak to your accountant about tax.
Not if it uses a soft search. See eligibility checks and your credit score.
