Most people think a car service is oil, a couple of filters and a stamp in the book. That is the bit you can see on the invoice, so it is the bit that sticks.
It is not wrong, but it is incomplete. A proper car service in Barnsley — Minor or Major — is a road test, a written health check and a list of things that only show up when somebody looks, measures and writes them down. The oil change is the easy part. The value is in what gets found before it becomes a breakdown.
We run two main services. A Minor is due every 6 months or 6,000 miles. A Major is due every 12 months or 12,000 miles. Shorthand: Minor from £169, Major from £319. Both include VAT.
A Minor covers the basics that keep the car safe and the engine healthy between the bigger jobs: a road test, engine oil and filter, a brake check, tyre condition, tread and pressures, fuel and brake lines, the exhaust and underside, all the levels, the battery and charging system, lights and wipers, and a written health check.
A Major does everything in the Minor, then goes further. The wheels come off so pads and discs can be measured. We change the air filter and the pollen filter, and the spark plugs where the car has them. We inspect the suspension, steering and driveshafts. We moisture-test the brake fluid, check the air conditioning, and put the car back out for a second road test.
That is why the prices are different. You are not paying twice for the same oil change. You are paying for the extra hours, the extra parts and the measurements that only happen when the wheels are off.
Every service we do uses fully synthetic oil that meets the manufacturer's specification. There is no semi-synthetic on the menu.
Budget is our own-brand fully synthetic. Premium is a branded oil with manufacturer approvals. Long life is the specification-critical grade, for cars that need a particular oil and nothing else. Every one of those meets the manufacturer spec. Budget is only offered where the spec allows it.
That matters more than the brand name on the bottle. Modern engines, especially ones with a wet belt or a long service interval, are designed around a particular oil. The wrong grade can leave the belt soaked in oil it was never meant to live in, or leave turbo bearings and variable-valve gear without the film they need. The right grade is not an upsell. It is the difference between a service that matches the handbook and one that only looks like it.
If you want the background on wet belt engines, and why the oil they sit in matters, we wrote it up in our guide to wet belt replacement in Barnsley.
A service without a written health check is just a parts swap. The check is what turns the visit into a report on the car you are actually driving.
On a Minor we look at the brakes, tyres, lines, exhaust, underside, battery, lights and wipers, and we write down what we find. On a Major we add measured pad and disc thicknesses, suspension and steering notes, a brake fluid moisture reading and an air con check. You leave with that on paper, not with a shrug and a stamped book.
That record is useful for two reasons. First, you can see what is fine and what is wearing, with numbers rather than vague advice. Second, the next time the car comes in, we are not starting from scratch. We can see what was noted last time and whether it has moved.
We do not invent work from that list. If something is worn but still within limits, we say so. If it needs doing, we quote it before any extra work starts. The health check is not a sales script. It is the reason you paid for a service instead of an oil change.
Fair questions.
You can get an oil and filter done almost anywhere. What you do not get with that alone is the underside look, the brake check, the tyre report, the battery test or anything in writing. Most of the failures that strand people are not caused by dirty oil. They are caused by a tyre that was already bald on the inside edge, a brake pad that had worn past the rivet, or a battery that had been dying for months. An oil-only job does not catch those.
A Major is not a padded Minor. The wheels-off pad and disc measurement alone is a different job, and so are the air and pollen filters, the plugs, the fluid moisture test and the second road test. If your car is due a Minor, book a Minor. If it is due a Major, book a Major. We will not push you up a tier because the diary is quiet.
One more honest point. We are not an MOT testing station. If you want an MOT with the service, it is booked and paid for by us at a DVSA-approved testing station. The test fee is £54.85. Any repairs needed to pass are quoted first and charged separately.
All prices include VAT. Minor from £169, Major from £319.

A service is more than oil, filters and a stamp. The Minor covers the checks that keep the car honest between the bigger jobs. The Major adds the measurements and the parts that only make sense once a year. The oil grade is there because the engine was designed for it, and the written health check is there so you leave knowing what we found.
You do not need a Major every time the car comes in, and you do not need every optional package on the same day. What you do need is the service that matches the schedule, done with the right oil, and a piece of paper that says what the car is actually like.
