Can you MOT a month early and keep the same due date?

How does the month-early MOT rule work?

An MOT lasts a year. GOV.UK’s own example is the easiest way to remember it:

• If your MOT runs out on 15 May, the earliest you can get it done and keep 15 May next year is 16 April.

• You can test earlier than that. If you pass on 14 April, the new expiry becomes 13 April the following year. You have given a day away.

The useful move is not “as early as possible”. It is inside that month-minus-a-day window. Check the date on the current certificate, or look it up on the official MOT history service with the registration. You can also sign up for GOV.UK reminders.

If the MOT has already run out, you cannot drive or park the vehicle on the road except to a pre-arranged MOT, or to or from a place of repair. Driving without a valid MOT can mean a fine of up to £1,000. You also cannot renew vehicle tax without a valid MOT, unless you SORN it. All of that is easier while the current ticket is still live.

That is why the autumn window matters in South Yorkshire. Test stations fill up once the clocks go back and the first cold week hits. Booking the test a month early is not about rushing. It is about leaving a gap for bulbs, tyres or a brake job if the tester records a fail.

What actually fails, according to DVSA?

This is not guesswork from the ramp. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency publishes MOT testing data for Great Britain. The latest tables on GOV.UK (updated 30 October 2025) include April to June 2025 — quarter 1 of the 2025 to 2026 financial year.

For class 3 and 4 vehicles (cars and light vans), the overall initial failure rate was 27.24%. That is the vehicle as it arrived, before any same-day rectification. 7.16% of tests had at least one dangerous defect.

Two details from the same table are worth sitting with. Tyres are not the most common fail, but they are often dangerous when they do fail: 4.42% of tests had a dangerous tyre defect. Brakes were next, at 2.39%. Lights fail more often than anything else, but they are rarely marked dangerous — 10.29% of tests had a major lamps or electrical fail; 0.14% were dangerous. A blown bulb or a dead number-plate lamp still stops a pass. It is also the first thing you will notice once the school run is in the dark.

DVSA says this data set is not an official statistic. Treat the numbers as a clear picture of what testers are recording, not a league table of towns.

Why does autumn make those categories bite in Barnsley?

Highway Code Annex 6 is the unglamorous owner’s list: lights, brakes, steering, wipers, washers, demisters, tyres, fluids, battery. It also has a short “before winter” line: keep the battery in decent order, and put the right anti-freeze in the radiator and the screen bottle. That maps onto the DVSA table.

Lights. Highway Code Rule 113: sidelights and the rear registration plate lamp must be on between sunset and sunrise. Tyres. For cars, light vans and light trailers the legal minimum is 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, all the way round. That is the Highway Code and the MOT inspection manual, not a workshop preference. 1.6 mm is the legal floor, not a comfortable one on a wet slip road off the M1 at junction 37. Check pressures when the tyres are cold, and look at the sidewalls for cuts and bulges. Uneven wear often points at alignment or tired dampers, which is why suspension sits high on the fail list.

Brakes, screen, battery. If the pedal feels longer than it used to, or the vehicle pulls, do not wait for the test to tell you. Wipers that smear and an empty washer bottle are visibility fails. A battery that still starts the car on a mild September morning can struggle once nights are cold and you are doing short local hops with lights and blowers on — Wombwell, Hoyland, Dodworth, Penistone, Cudworth, Royston. Hybrids and EVs still have a 12-volt battery for everyday electronics. They still need an MOT too.

A service is not an MOT. The test is a legal snapshot. The service is what actually keeps lights, tyres, brakes and fluids in a state to pass. What should you check the week before the test?

Keep it to things you can see and feel.

1. Confirm the due date on GOV.UK MOT history. Note any open advisories from last year. Advisories are not a fail. Ignoring the same one twice often is.

2. Walk-round lights, as above. Carry a spare bulb kit if the vehicle still uses replaceable bulbs.

3. Tread, pressures, and the spare or inflator kit if you have one.

4. Screen, wipers, washer fluid with the right mix for colder nights.

5. A look underneath for wet patches after it has stood. Do not diagnose from a photo. Just notice it.
