Buying a Car Locally: Why It Helps Before and After the Sale

Buying a Car Locally: Why It Helps Before and After the Sale

Buying a car from a dealer near home makes it easier to see the car before you commit, take a proper test drive, and get help quickly if something needs sorting after the sale. Distance does not change your legal rights, but it does change how easy they are to use.

Why does it help to see a car in person?

Photos and descriptions only tell part of the story. Seeing the car lets you check the bodywork and interior for yourself, look at the tyres, try the seats and controls, and make sure the car suits your family, your parking space and your journeys. A test drive on roads you know is the best way to judge comfort, noise and how the car feels at motorway speed.

Our guide to checking a car's history before you buy covers the paperwork side.

What are my rights when I buy from a dealer?

When you buy from a business, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says the car must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. If a fault shows up in the first 30 days, you can normally reject the car for a refund. After that, the dealer usually gets one chance to repair or replace it.

If you buy at a distance, for example online or by phone without visiting, you also normally have 14 days to cancel. Citizens Advice explains these rights in more detail.

Why does distance matter after the sale?

Most questions after buying a car are small: a warning light, a missing service record, a part that needs looking at. When the dealer is local, it is far easier to drop the car in, talk face to face and get things resolved. A dealer hundreds of miles away may need the car transported, which adds time for everyone.

Being close to home also makes routine servicing easier to fit in. Our service centre is here in Barnsley for servicing and repairs.

What should I ask any dealer before buying?

  • Can I see the service history and MOT history?

  • Has the car had a history check for outstanding finance, write-offs and mileage?

  • What has been done to prepare the car for sale?

  • What warranty comes with the car, and what does it cover?

  • If something goes wrong, who do I contact and where would the work be done?

Common questions

Can I part exchange my current car with a local dealer?

Yes, most dealers take part exchanges. You can get a valuation online before you visit.

Is it worth travelling a long way for a cheaper car?

Sometimes, but add the cost of travel and the time it would take to sort any problems. A slightly dearer car nearby can work out better value overall.

Can I arrange finance through a local dealer?

Many dealers can introduce you to lenders. We are a credit broker, not a lender, and any finance is subject to status and affordability checks. Find out more on our finance page.
